Let’s think the unthinkable, let’s do the undoable. Let us prepare to grapple with the ineffable itself, and see if we may not eff it after all.

Hello fellow traveller, thanks for joining us on our journey. It’s great to have you here.

We’re off! After a mad scramble after both losing or resigning from our jobs, getting our home ready for AirBnB, researching our travels, renewing passports and actually booking the first couple of flights and places to stay … we are finally off.

Our home is up on AirBnB, we are feeling very professional and adult about all of this.

Packed and traveling light.

Our first stop is Bali, Indonesia – the island of the gods.

We didn’t stay long: just a day in transit. Our flight came in to Denpasar and our ferry to Gili Gede (what I would call “the real start to our trip”) left from Sanur. So we had a day in the village of Sanur, meeting happy locals, exploring the beachside village, drinking coffee, and finally having an awesome dinner on the beach.

Not enough to even scratch the surface of this amazing place but enough to know we need to come back for a proper visit!

Where we stayed

Guna Kaya Homestay

Not fancy but nice enough! Good base located near the village and beach, friendly staff who organised transfers, simple but delicious local breakfast.

Local spots worth checking out

Good coffee: Sala

Delicious lunch: Tree Bar

Dinner on the beach: Lilla Pantai

Essential phrases

All with palms together 🙏 :

  • Om Suastiastu – a Balinese blessing and a lovely way to say hello
  • Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti – a farewell blessing, wishing someone peace in mind, body and spirit
  • Terima Kasih – thank you

Coming next …

Gili Gede and Lombok!
